Project Overview
The Moon Valley Project is a large scale, transformative habitat restoration project that will re-establish the plentiful salmon habitat conditions in the Big Quilcene River that once existed in this mile long valley. In the mid-1900s, the river was channelized and confined to the southern margin of the valley. These actions severely impacted historic salmon habitat and created dysfunctional sediment dynamics that increased flooding in residential areas further downstream.
During the implementation of the project, a new river channel network will be excavated throughout the surrounding floodplain to replace the existing impaired channel. This new channel network will be almost 9,000 feet longer than the existing channel, and will contain numerous pools, log jams, and other features that provide important salmon habitat, and normalize sediment dynamics in the lower Big Quilcene River.
PUBLIC NOTICE
Beginning on the downstream side of the Highway 101 bridge, the Big Quilcene River and adjacent areas are temporarily closed to public access for approximately 1.1 miles. Extensive construction activities are currently occurring, and it is dangerous for unauthorized individuals to be in the area.
Thank you for your cooperation and patience during the construction of this project. Public access to the area will be allowed to resume once construction activities are finished. In the near future, Moon Valley will provide greatly improved recreational opportunities. We are excited to share this area with you once restoration is complete!
