Summer Chum Trap – Volunteer!

August 15, 2021 - October 15, 2021

Are you passionate about salmon? Do you want to contribute and learn a ton too? Help us monitor returning adult Summer Chum Salmon on the Union River! Hood Canal Salmon Enhancement Group has been researching Union River Summer Chum Salmon for 21 years!

Each year we setup a weir trap that captures returning salmon. We rely on volunteers 24/7 to count and identify fish and move them upstream to spawn. HCSEG’s trap is located just outside of Belfair off HWY 300 (just behind QFC) and we have four trap shifts to choose from. We provide waders, a heated trailer, and shelter. This is fun for the whole family!

If you are new to volunteering at this trap, don’t worry, a trained staff member will arrive at the beginning of your first shift to walk you through everything you need to know about checking the trap. Just show up at the Hwy 300 Union River trap location at the beginning of your shift and someone will be there to train you.

There will be a training session on Sunday, August 15th, from 11am-1pm at the Hwy 300 Union River trap locationIf you can’t make this training do not worry! HCSEG will work with volunteers to conduct training at the beginning of each shift if needed.

We need volunteers from August 15 – October 15, 24/6! Use the link below to go to the volunteer page and sign-up for a time slot:
