climate resilience internship

This internship is intended to expose high school youth to the fundamentals of climate science through hands-on experience with scientific monitoring and field data collection on Hood Canal estuary and streams. Students will assist scientists from the Washington Department of Natural Resources and the Hood Canal Salmon Enhancement Group in conducting research. Students will join the Hood Canal Salmon Enhancement Group (HCSEG) in conducting the Pollution Identification and Control Program (PIC), by investigating water quality from various rivers and estuaries through excursions out in the field and sample collection. Students will gain experience in the HCSEG lab analyzing the samples they collect out in the field, and explore what impacts the water quality of our local Hood Canal watershed.
LEARN HOW TO:
• Program and deploy environmental logging sensors to collect data on ocean acidification.
• Monitor shellfish recruitment and set in different habitats.
• Use a drone for mapping habitat.
• Collect and analyze sediment and water samples.
• Conduct biological field surveys.
• Use a dissection microscope to identify shellfish larvae.
• Collect elevation data with a rotating laser level and stadia rod
• Use stream gauge, flow meter and piezometer for stream surveys.
• Use submerged video cameras to collect data on fish use in different habitats.
